The purpose of the project was to identify the source of particulate materials (debris) found in a pump that failed during its commissioning, using advanced material characterization techniques. This analysis was essential to determine the root cause of the problem and prevent future occurrences.

The challenge arose when the pumping unit experienced issues after only 10-15 hours of operation, displaying a sequence of events that included false temperature alarms, high vibrations, and eventually a shutdown due to over-torque. Subsequent inspection revealed significant damage to critical components such as seals, axial bearings, and bushings.

The GIE GROUP technical team implemented a comprehensive analysis plan that included:

• Semiquantitative elemental analysis using EDS microprobe in SEM
• Crystalline phase analysis through XRD
• Detailed review of the pump manual and material specifications
• Correlation between analytical results and technical specifications

As a key highlight of the project, complementary analytical techniques were employed, allowing not only the identification of chemical elements present in the particles but also the determination of their crystalline structure and possible origin.

The project was completed within an optimized timeframe of 15 business days, including the performance of specialized tests and the preparation of a detailed technical report with specific recommendations for the client.
